The Tsinghua University International Chinese Language & Culture Center (ICLCC) was established in 1988.

In the early 1950s, a group of former Eastern European diplomats came to study Chinese at Tsinghua University, which started the development of teaching Chinese to internationals in the Peoples Republic of China. Not only is the beautiful and magnificent Tsinghua University at the forefront of modern China's higher education institutes, it is also the birth place of Chinese studies for internationals in China.

In coordination with Tsinghua's goals of becoming a world-class university, the ICLCC, being an important window for Tsinghua's advancement towards internationalization, has been committing itself to the development of Chinese studies internationally for many years. ICLCC has been very successful in many aspects. These include the steady expansion of the teaching scale, the continuous improvements in the quality of teaching, the creation of stronger international bonds, the advancements in academic research, and the gradual perfecting of the centers management. Currently, over 1000 foreign students enroll at the center each year, including Chinese language students, international students, and exchange students. The center offers language classes at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, as well as core and elective classes. The construction of classes is very complete, and also focuses on guiding students to combine their language studies with cultural experiences. Furthermore the ICLCC encourages foreign students to continue with their higher education in China after they have built a good foundation in their Chinese language.
The Center has already formed many links with universities in the USA, Japan, Korea, UK, etc. The center, in cooperation with these universities, has offered short-term accredited Chinese language courses, and has also sent Chinese teachers to teach at the partnering foreign universities. In addition, the Center worked together with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) to establish the Confucius Institute for Business, as well as popularized the teaching of Mandarin Chinese in Hong Kong and Macau. The Center also provides academic level accredited courses for Tsinghua University’s international students, studying for Masters, or Ph.D. .
In 2010, The Center, together with the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Tsinghua University, was granted the right to award Masters in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL).
Currently, the director of the Centre is Professor Sun Mingjun, and the associate directors are Professor Ding Xia, Associate Professor Dong Shiwei, Associate Professor Liu Dong.
