In the 16th "21st Century Cup" National English Speaking Competition held on December 19, 2010, Xu Jiru of Tsinghua University won the local competition of Beijing. The competition tripartite with a speech on a given topic, an impromptu speech, and question and answer attracted students from more than 20 prestigious universities in Beijing. Sponsored by the China Daily, hosted by 21st Century English newspapers, the competition is part of the International English Speaking Contest held every May in London, UK. The faculty and students in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Tsinghua have been very active in organizing the local competitions and coaching students from Tsinghua, who have won both local and national competitions many times.
